Island Bay, Wellington - Cam Theme - 10

Island Bay is one of the southernmost suburbs of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand.
It lies on the Cook Strait (the band of water between the north and south islands) - and is situated 7km south of the city centre.
Island Bay is settled on the bay which shares its name, one of numerous small bays that lie to the west of the large indentation of Lyall Bay.

Looking south from Island Bay. On a clear day (did I point out already the lovely blue sky in this pic?) the south island can be seen from here. Next week's cam will show you what I mean...

'Thunderbird Island' - well, that's what I called it until I found out the real name... Some 500m offshore in Island Bay lies small Tapu Teranga Island , a recreational reserve for which the bay is named. The caves of the island were once a hiding place for local Maori, when attacked by other tribes. This island forms a natural breakwater, giving the suburb a sheltered anchorage.

Looking east again, Island Bay to the left and the entrance to Wellington harbour in the distance. One of the inter island ferries can be seen making its way 'home'...

Despite appearances to the contrary, the Lighthouse was never built to serve as such. It is available for rent as bed and breakfast accommodation.

A man's house is his castle, so the saying goes. This stone "house" (The Keep ) is a popular B&B on the coastal road to Island Bay.

Evans Bay, Wellington - Cam Theme - 9

Evans Bay is an inlet between Mt Victoria and the Miramar Peninsula that serves as a flight path to the low-lying Wellington Airport runway.
Apparently in earlier times there were seaplanes which docked nearby, but I can't find any confirmed info on it. Suffice to say, it is one of many 'Bay Suburbs' that dot the Wellington Harbour.
Our walks around Oriental Bay now extend past Point Jemingham to Little Karaka Bay - which are all on the way to Evans Bay.

Oh, and have I already mentioned the wonderful blue skies and calm waters of the photos in this week's CAM?
